1 John 2:3-11

 

1. How do we know that we know Christ? Include other passages that help determine what it means to “know Christ”.

 

 

 

2. How do we know that we are in Christ? Include other passages that help determine what it means to be “in Christ”.

 

 

 

3. John refers to an “old commandment” and a “new commandment” in verses 7-8. Are these commandments the same or different? Please explain your answer (see John 13:31-35, 2 John 5-6).

 

 

 

4. What are the comparisons and/or contrasts made in verses 9-11?

5. The writer divides the hearers into three categories and praises them in some aspect of their Christian walk. List the categories and what John praises each one for. What application do you personally get from this passage?

Thought question: Please make a list of material things you love in the world that are not in and of themselves wrong. How do we make a distinction of these things with 1 John 2:15? How can we make sure our enjoyment of these things does not get us off track in seeking the Lord’s Kingdom and Heaven as our first priority?
